Whilst delays in traffic jams, and difficulties of parking have already caught public attention, and whilst road accidents have become the subject of a steadily mounting campaign to try to catch public attention – the deterioration of our urban surroundings under the growing weight of traffic has passed almost unnoticed. Part of the explanation is doubtless the fact that we have all grown up with the motor vehicle, and it has grown up with us, so we tend to take it and its less desirable effects very much for granted.
