It was this last consideration that led us to choose a study area in Central London. We chose, in fact, the area in the south-west quadrant of the intersection of Euston Road and Tottenham Court Road, this being a suitable mixed-use area, parts of which need redevelopment, but where no controversy was raging in which we might be thought to be involved. We did not rigidly define the southern and western sides of our study area because we wanted to see where considerations of environmental areas would lead us, but we had Great Portland Street in mind as the western limit, and Oxford Street to the south so as to bring in the difficult problems presented by that street. We acknowledge the courtesy of the Architect to the London County Council, and his planning Division, in making survey information available to us.
